True Blue Team History

With a rich history in motorsport Phil Dixon took his first ride in a Jetboat in 2002 at the Cabarita circuit in Queensland. From that moment on he was captured by the pure exhilaration of what Jetsprint racing has to offer. Realising the untapped potential in this sport and the pure excitement of racing in it, he decided that this was the category he wanted to invest in.

In 2003 he created the True Blue Racing team and built his first boat for the 350 class. In building this boat he learnt all the important features required to develop a successful race boat by immersing himself amongst the best in the sport. He competed in his debut season in 2003 and was extremely successful, winning the Australian Championship for the 350 class.

In 2004 buoyed by his success in the previous year, and not content to just defend his title, he stepped up to the 400 class and built a completely new boat from scratch. Using an untested hull design and a completely new engine, he endeavoured to repeat the team’s success from the previous year.
2004 though proved to be a tough season for the True Blue team with many challenges thrown at them. Although Phil had invested heavily in the new boat it did not perform as well as expected. The year turned out to be a steep learning curve for the True Blue crew with many design changes made to the boat throughout the season, the team continuing to develop their knowledge for an assault on the forthcoming world titles.

At the end of 2004 the UIM World Series Jetsprint Championships came to Australia for two events, one at Albury and the other at Melton. The World Series brought with it to the country the class of boat unseen before in Australia, the V8 Superboats. Having traveled to New Zealand and seen the Superboats before Phil realised that this was the future of the sport in Australia. Putting his well worked 400 class boat aside he invested in a world standard Superboat owned by the UIM World Series promoter, Jeremy O’Driscoll. The Superboat’s shear power and manoeuvrability gave Phil the thrill that he needed and he raced it very successfully on debut, taking fourth in the World Series in the V8 Superboat class.

It proved to be a great success for the sport in Australia, with a strong contingent of Superboats competing for the Australian Championship.
They proved awesome to watch and drew greater publicity and subsequent crowds to each round of the Australian Championships, helping to develop the sport further into the professional realm. The True Blue team proved once again to be successful winning the Australian Championship in the inaugural year of the V8 Superboat class.

2005 was also a year where the True Blue team grew to two boats, with Phil’s sixteen year old daughter Brooke commencing racing in the 400 class in a completely re-worked race boat. Inspired to follow in her father’s footsteps, Brooke was a complete natural at the sport coming eighth in the 400 class in her debut season. Not content to just rest on his laurels, Phil built a brand new Superboat for the 2006 season, using the latest design and technology to ensure that he would ultimately be competitive against the best in the world as he embarked on another assault on the world and Australian championships. It proved to be the right move, the True Blue Racing team enjoying it’s most successful season to date, culminating in victory in the 2006 UIM World Jetsprint Championship and declaring themselves world champions in both the drivers and racing team titles.

Holden V8 Supercar driver Nathan Pretty joined Brooke in the drivers seat of True Blue Too, competing in the 400 class as a wild card entry in the UIM World Championship that was held in Australia during December. Nathan won all three rounds to claim the World Drivers Title in what was a spectacular victory for the team against some of the top rated drivers in the world. Using Pretty as leverage, the True Blue team also gained unprecedented media coverage during the three rounds, with coverage on commercial television and all the major newspapers around Australia.

Overall, this meant that the True Blue Racing team had won the World Championship in the race team/constructors championship for 2006, a sterling achievement for the relatively young team. In the Australian Jetsprint Championships, True Blue Racing again enjoyed great success with Phil winning the Championship in the Superboat class, while ‘rookie of the year’ 18 year old Brooke Dixon, came an incredible second in the 400 Class.Using his broad experience in business Phil Dixon has built the True Blue Racing team into an extremely professional and well run team. Both race boats attend all media days held before each round ensuring optimum exposure in the media with many newspaper and television features.

The True Blue team has also featured on the NSW ‘Footy Show’, giving all cast members a well documented lap around a race track, and a feature on ‘A Current Affair’ on Channel Nine nationally, talking about the sport and the True Blue team. With a strong showing in the three World Series events, the True Blue team has been involved in while giving many interviews, has exposed the race team to an audience of some 56 million people around the world.

Subsequently the True Blue Racing team is not only the most exposed and well known team in the country, but one of the highest profile teams around the world. As owner of the team Phil Dixon knew that to be successful he needed to assemble a team of professionals experienced in the racing and the technology required to win. Over the years he has assembled an impressive array of professionals all committed to the success of the True Blue Racing team.
